Singles play highlights men’s tennis performance at UAB

Michael Shipma Sports Editor The Troy men’s tennis team had another successful singles showing on Sunday, as Pablo Moreno led his team with a singles draw victory. Moreno had to earn every win during his team’s run in the CCB Collegiate Invitational, as hosted by Samford University. Moreno defeated Eastern Kentucky’s Ramon Van Flymen 7-5, 7-5, before winning a thrilling 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 match against Justin Ghavami of Samford.   Michael Shipma Sports Editor The Troy men’s tennis team cruised to multiple wins at the UNCC Fall Invitational on Sunday. The Trojans dominated in singles play and finished the weekend with a trio of Trojans winning their brackets. Troy’s ITA/USTA run cut short in Auburn

Scott Watkins Staff Writer The Troy men’s tennis team competed in the ITA/USTA Southern Regional competition in Auburn over the weekend, but only advanced to the second day of play in the four-day tournament. Troy opened its competition in singles play with Andy Laer’s first-round match against Auburn’s Richie Sivalls on Friday morning. Laer won the match 6-1, 6-2. Men’s tennis wraps up play in Macon

Michael Shipma Sports Editor The Troy men’s tennis team wrapped up play at the Mercer Gridiron Classic on Sunday in Macon, Georgia. The three-day event was hosted by Mercer University and featured fellow Sun Belt team Georgia Southern. The Trojans were led in singles play by freshman Jaiqi Duan, who capped off his weekend with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Mercer’s Nicolas Guillon on the third day of play. Michael Shipma Sports Editor The Troy men’s tennis team had a promising opening to its season at the Rice Collegiate Invitational. Junior Andre Baldo and sophomore Gabriel Niculescu led the Trojans in Houston. Baldo won the singles C draw and Niculescu won a consolation draw in singles play. In addition to the competition at the Lunsford Tennis Complex in Troy, Alabama, the Trojans (15-13, 1-3 Sun Belt) honored seniors Daniel Bustamante and Giovani Samaha. On Thursday, Feb. 25, the Trojans beat Louisiana-Lafayette, but the other half of the squad lost to Xavier. The Ragin’ Cajuns took the doubles point 2-1. Troy men’s tennis falls to in-state powerhouses Auburn, Alabama
