Fast and furious: Track and field sets new records

Jill Odom Sports Editor The Troy track and field team raised the bar at the Tiger Track Classic and 23 Trojans set new personal records throughout the events on Friday, April 3, and Saturday, April 4. The Trojans traveled to Auburn for the event, and Sun Belt rival South Alabama was among the competitors. In the women’s javelin, sophomore Riley Schwietz earned sixth place after a 39.35-meter throw, barely missing her previous personal record. Track and field team continues setting new personal records

Jill Odom Sports Editor The Troy track and field team competed in the University of North Florida Spring Break Invitational and finished with several top-five finishes on Friday, March 27, and Saturday, March 28.  On Friday, freshman Corina Cox won the women’s discus throw with a 50.99-meter toss. This is now Cox’s third-straight win in the discus event. She was also named last week’s Sun Belt Women’s Field Athlete of the Week. Track and field team stays strong at the Alabama Relays

Jill Odom Sports Editor The Troy track and field team shone bright at the John Mitchell Alabama Relays, despite a short power outage on Friday, March 20. During the first day of the meet at Tuscaloosa, Troy had three top-10 finishes from senior Paige McMillan, sophomore Cameron Rice, and the women’s 4×200-meter relay team. McMillan placed fourth in the 100-meter dash after crossing the finish line in 12.17 seconds. She also was a part of the relay team that placed ninth at 1:39.54. Jill Odom Sports Editor The Troy track and field team traveled to Conway, South Carolina, for the Coach “O” Coastal Carolina University Invitational and came away with strong finishes. Even though there was a 42-team field, the Trojans were not daunted. On Friday, March 13, junior Lacey Marcus won the women’s 100-meter hurdles in 15.44 seconds. Freshman Elizabeth Locklier had a 3.20-meter pole vault, making it her best outdoor finish and earned her fourth place. Track and field finishes in ninth at the Sun Belt Indoor Championship

Jill Odom Sports Editor The Troy track and field team wrapped up its indoor season at the Sun Belt Indoor Championship in Birmingham, toppling personal records and finishing in ninth place. On Monday, Feb. 23, freshmen Sara Zylstra and Naomi Sheppard, along with sophomore Sierra King, and junior Julia Ostendorf made up the distance medley group and broke Troy’s 2007 record of 12:26.30. Track and field finishes up indoor season

Jill Odom Sports Editor The Troy track and field team concluded its regular indoor season at the Samford Invitational, and several Trojans set new personal bests during the weekend. Troy took on Sun Belt rivals ULM, Appalachian State, Arkansas State, Georgia State and UALR.  The events for Friday, Feb. 13, were the men’s and women’s high jump and 200-meter dash. Jill Odom Sports Editor The Troy track and field team traveled to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, to compete at the Middle Tennessee Invitational and came away with a first-place finish on Saturday, Feb. 7. Troy vied for dominance against schools such as Middle Tennessee, Belmont, Chattanooga, Eastern Kentucky, Southern Miss, and UAB. Jill Odom Sports Editor In just the second track and field meet of the season, Troy collected its first win at the UNC Open in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on Saturday, Jan. 17. Freshman Niata Alexander continues to impress by picking up her first win in her college career in the women’s 400-meter dash with a time of 56.71.
