The Troy volleyball team traveled to the Carolinas to take on Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State. On Friday night, Troy lost in just three sets to the defending conference champions, the Chanticleers.
In the opening set, Troy opened up with a 7-3 lead, but the Chanticleers were able to tie the game at 7 with a four-point swing. Coastal followed the swing with two more four-point runs to close out the opening set and defeat the Trojans 25-17.
The second set remained competitive until midway through the set. With the game tied at 17, a five-point run by the Chanticleers gave them a late advantage Troy could not battle back from. Troy dropped the second set 25-19.
The Chanticleers took the final set of the match 25-16 after impressive four-, five- and six-point runs. Despite the tough loss, senior Logan Page shined during the match, posting a .533 attacking percentage. Freshman Amara Anderson recorded her 14th double-double of the season with 26 assists and 11 digs.
On Saturday, Troy traveled into the mountains to take on the East Division leaders, Appalachian State. All four sets of the match ended with a 25-20 score. Troy took the first of the four sets but dropped three straight to the Mountaineers.
Troy and Appalachian State went tit for tat with each other until the 19-point mark in the opening set. Troy went on a seven-point streak to down the Mountaineers in the opening set. In the second set, Troy’s momentum continued and led it to an early three-point lead. However, the Mountaineers fought back with a couple of runs to topple Troy in the second set.
In the third and fourth sets, the Trojans got behind early in the sets. The ladies fought hard to put themselves back in the sets with five-point runs but were not able to overcome the deficits. Troy dropped the second, third and fourth sets 25-20.
Cheyenne Hayes regained her footing after losing her double-digit kill streak last weekend. The sophomore recorded 17 kills against the Mountaineers. Troy put up a stout defensive effort with the team totaling 61 digs and 11 blocks, the second most blocks in a single game this season.
Troy will travel down South on Saturday, looking to follow up the football and soccer efforts in downing the South Alabama Jaguars.
