The Vietnamese Student Association (VSA) has changed the date of its Lunar New Year celebration to Feb. 8 due to conflicting events, but still holds the promise of food, skits, traditional dances and more.

“I had to change the date, so it wouldn’t be at the same time as the Chinese Lunar New Year festival,” said Ha Tran, president of the VSA.

“The New Year festival is very important in Vietnam,” said Tran. “We (Vietnamese students) are so far from home here (at Troy), but we can still celebrate it together.”

“It would be interesting to see how the Vietnamese students celebrate their holidays,” said Taylor Henderson, a sophomore nursing major from Mobile.

Students can expect traditional Vietnamese cuisine and performances at the event.

Members of the VSA will perform skits along with the practiced songs and dances throughout the event.

“There will be a family atmosphere (at the event),” said Tran.

Tran encourages Troy students to experience a part of Vietnamese culture while the festival makes Vietnamese students “feel closer to home.”

“It’s cool that Troy is expanding the events they take part in and opening up to different cultures,” said Bronwyn Arnold, a senior English major with a minor in education from Prattville.

More than 100 tickets have already been sold leading up to the event.

“We (VSA) hope there are more than 200 people to be at the festival,” said Tran. “We will be selling tickets through the week until the festival.”

“I think it’s a great opportunity for Vietnamese students to remember their home,” said Natalie Johnson, a freshman history education major from Madison. “American students can also learn more about their (Vietnamese) culture.”

It will be held on Feb. 8 in the second floor Trojan Center ballroom at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are $10 for students and $12 for non-students.
