Members of Troy’s symphony band program can finally catch a breath as their annual Spring Concert came to a close Monday evening in the Crosby Theater. Junior music education major, Rad Bolt, had been practicing since the beginning of April. All that practice finally paid off when he performed with the band as the principal saxophonist.
“It’s kind of like our ‘wind down’ concert,” Bolt said. “It was a lot more laid back in terms of music selection.” The set list consisted of songs like “The Engulfed Cathedral” by Debussy and the piece “Elegy and Fanfare March” by Roger Nixon — Bolt’s personal favorite.
Bolt talked about Troy’s other annual concerts like the Veterans Day Concert and the Sounds of the Season Christmas Concert; The spring concert is the last of the year; usually called the Commencement Concert, this year it was simply called the Spring Concert.
Bolt has been playing the saxophone for eight years, and has been involved in band for just as long. He also plays the clarinet in Troy’s concert band and has gained a lot of insight through his experience.
“I gained the qualities necessary to become a superior musician,” Bolt said. “I appreciate the fact that Troy is a small school—it gives us opportunities you wouldn’t get anywhere else. My mom pushed me to go to Florida State, but I would have just been a number there.”
Though there is much more to be heard, Troy’s symphony band ended this school year with a bang and will deliver the same dedicated talent in years to come.
