The Trojan soccer team fell at home to UL-Lafayette on Sunday, Sept. 25, despite fighting back from a two-goal deficit to force overtime.

Thirteen minutes into that overtime, the fourth they have played this season, the Trojans (5-5-2, 1-1-1 Sun Belt) gave up the winning goal, losing 3-2.

The hosts were bombarded with crosses in the opening minutes of the match. Failed clearances and well-timed pressure led to two early goals for the Ragin’ Cajuns (6-5-1, 2-1-1 Sun Belt).

Senior forward Yazmin Montoya gave the lead to UL-Lafayette in the 18th minute before junior defender Ashleigh Cade doubled the advantage.

The two-goal flurry was followed by a lightning delay, in which the Trojans were able to regroup. They returned to the match a different team.

Despite the two-hour delay, the match had no shortage of offense. The hosts reeled off 17 shots to the visitors’ 13.

The Trojans also edged out their opponents in corners, 16-4, a stat that displayed their eye for attack in the latter stages of the match.

Senior forward Annabell Simpson led the comeback for the Trojans with a goal in the 48th minute.

That goal was followed by a 77th-minute equalizer from senior midfielder Nicole Harris, who ran onto a well-placed pass from junior defender Haley Roberson.

The goal was enough to force overtime for the Trojans, who were looking for their second conference win of the season.

The Trojans eventually fell in double overtime when freshman forward Erika Seirra headed home a pass to the back post.

The goal sealed the victory for the visitors, who handed Troy just its second home loss in its last 26 matches at the Troy Soccer Complex, and its first conference loss since last season against South Alabama.

Each keeper was good for five saves in the match. The hosts were guilty of seven fouls to the visiting team’s six.

The Trojans will travel to play Georgia State in Atlanta on Friday, Sept. 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
