The team from Boone, N.C., Appalachian State, exploded on to the college football scene in 2007 when the Mountaineers did the unthinkable by upsetting the Michigan Wolverines in the Big House 34-32.

Appalachian State was at the tail end of a NCAA Division I FCS national championship three-peat from 2005-2007 when it took down the Wolverines.

The Mountaineers, a school with around 17,000 enrolled, come to the Sun Belt from the Southern Conference, or SoCon, with something to prove against its new conference foes.

App State went 8-4 last season 6-2 in conference with losses to East Carolina, the Citadel, Wofford and Illinois State.

However, the Mountaineers were able defeat Georgia Southern 31-28, another school joining the Sun Belt with App State.

App State currently has seven former players in the NFL including D.J. Smith, a linebacker for the Green Bay Packers, and wide receiver Armanti Edwards, who plays for the Carolina Panthers.

App State looks to play the upset card yet again in 2013 when the Mountaineers hit the road to take on the Georgia Bulldogs of the SEC on Nov. 9.
