Symphony band members performed with the Boston Brass, an internationally renowned brass quintet band, in the Crosby Theater to give audience members a chance to hear the Symphony band's new piece, Perplexing Times.
Mark Walker, the Troy University’s Symphony Band Director, coordinates concerts and decides on special guests.
Musicians said the symphony band concerts are a great opportunity for students to enjoy music and the talent of Troy University’s bands.
“This is all about having fun,” said Jose Sibaja, a member of the Boston Brass. “Music is about having a great time, and that’s what this event was about.
“You should come check it out as you have a great opportunity of having an incredible band on your campus, so make sure you take advantage of it and, if you can, be a part of it.”
Troy University Symphony Band members were excited to hear and play on the same stage as the Boston Brass.
“It was just incredible to get to hear ‘The Green Hornet’ and ‘Caravan,’ which my friend and I were just listening to in the car on the way here,” said Theo Hornsby, a senior music education major from Montgomery, Alabama. “It was super awesome to get to hear that in person.”
Concerts give symphony band members the opportunity to improve not only their music skills but also have experiences with other skilled musicians.
“I love playing in concerts.” said Laura Phelps, a senior graphic design major from Marbury, Alabama.
“I still get nervous being on stage even though I’ve been doing it since I was eleven.
“It was really fun getting to play with such experienced musicians tonight.”
For students that missed out on this performance last week, Troy University has many events on campus that students can attend to enjoy music.
“There is so much music going on at Troy, and it's a fantastic opportunity to hear something and do something new,” Hornsby said.
The Boston Brass not only performed with Troy University’s Symphony Band but also held masterclasses for its members.
The Symphony Band’s last concert of the semester is scheduled for April 29.
