The fall tennis season is officially underway for Troy. As of Sunday, the first tournament of the men’s tennis season has concluded aftersix Trojans participated in a three-day tournament known as the Mercer Gridiron Challenge.
Luciano Alcocer propelled Troy to a strong fall start, capturing two finals – one as part of a doubles pair and one in his singles flight.
Prior to becoming a Trojan, Alcocer began making a name for himself in Queretaro, Mexico.
During that time, he worked to become ranked amongst the Top 200 in world rankings. His winning percentage reflected his work ethic, as he was victorious in 74%of his singles matches. TheMexico native also took home wins in five doubles matches while on the junior circuit.
Alcocer and freshman Hiiro Sakamoto paired up together for doubles at the event.
The pair ended day one of the tournament 2-0, besting one ofChattanooga’s doubles teams 6-3. They also beat a pair fromMercer 6-4.
In singles action on day one, Alcocer took down Mercer’s Howell Burns 7-5, 6-4.
Day two saw continued success from Alcocer and company. Another 6-4 doubles victory pushed the duo of Trojans through to thefinal round.
The sophomore also secured another victory against Chattanooga. There was no need for three sets, as the Trojan won 6-4, 6-3.
Alcocer saw semifinal action in singles action following his round of eight win. He toppled Mercer’s Esteban Davila Gasser 6-1, 6-2 in a dominant victory.Alcocer flourished on day three, capturing two finals wins. 6-4 was the final score as Troy’s duo brought home the first win of the day. The win came against Jacksonville State’s doubles team of David Krasner and Matei Palcau.
Not only did he bring home a doubles win, but he secured a win in the singles division as well. By a score of 6-4, 6-2, Alcocer solidified his place at the top of the leaderboards in his singles flight.
TAlcocer will look to carry his momentum into battle Oct. 11 as he leads his Trojans into Harlingen, Texas for the ITF Futures.
