An oldie but a goodie – 'The Princess Bride'

I’m aware this is an older movie, released in 1987, but it recently came to my attention that there are still people out there who have never seen this phenomenal movie.

This epic classic has it all. Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, and miracles . . . there is something for you here in “The Princess Bride.”

The author who wrote the book this movie is based on, William Goldman, also wrote the screenplay for the movie. Because of this, the movie retains every ounce of charm given in the novel, without any sacrifices.

The story centers on the true love of Westley and Buttercup, a farm boy and a common girl. Westley must sail away to find his fortune, so the two may marry. However, his ship is captured by pirates, and Buttercup goes into a deep depression. Prince Humperdinck chooses her to be his bride, but she’s kidnapped . . . and there I will leave my synopsis for fear of spoiling the epic tale.

The plot is entrancing, leaving you constantly on the edge of your seat. There is no shortage of laughs and quotable dialogue. Every scene is immersive, helping you feel as if you are there with Inigo and Fezzik fighting through the castle, bringing you into Miracle Max’s hut, letting you feel Westley’s pain and see the fear in Count Rugen’s eyes.

This movie is  in my top three favorites, and I’m the kind of person to have a lot of favorites! I never get tired of watching this film. You could tie me up in front of a television set with nothing but this movie playing for hours and hours on end, and I would be perfectly content.

I recommend everyone watch this movie at least once in their life, and then again, when that one friend pulls out the DVD they own at every movie night you organize.

All-in-all, I haven’t once met someone who didn’t enjoy this classic at least a little. There’s a lot here for everyone, no matter what you enjoy.

If you don’t enjoy it, watch it again. If you still don’t like it, go back and read the book, think about it, and watch it again. To still dislike this movie even then is totally inconceivable.

Overall: 10/10
