Troy University raised over $6,000 for cancer research and treatment as the annual Relay for Life event concluded on Saturday, March 24.
Student organizations gathered on the Shackelford Quad at noon to participate in a friendly competition to see who could raise the most money for the American Cancer Society. The event focused on the theme “One Troy, One Cure,” and featured food, drinks and accessories for sale.
Live music by the band Rebel, along with a free-to-use bounce house, gave students who were not involved in the competition a chance to have a good time.
“I really liked how everyone was involved and enthusiastic about it,” said Agnes Ribet, a senior from France who was not involved in the competition. “I had fun.”
“Our overall total at this point is almost $7,000, and with other donations coming in the next couple weeks, we are sure we will meet our goal of $10,000,” said Emily Tew, a junior communication major from Headland and student director for Relay for Life. “We had about 17 teams participate, and they were all out here today.
“It was, overall, a very successful event, and we are looking forward to next year.”
Each item sold went into that particular team’s fundraising total.
Kappa Delta Sorority took home the award for top Greek fundraising team while the Student Government Association was gifted the top non-Greek award.
“I am very excited to be able to raise money for such a good cause,” said Sydney St. John, a sophomore nursing major from Leeds and one of SGA’s team co-leaders. “I think it is important to remember that people and their families are affected by it daily, so any little bit amount of money that you can raise is helpful and is worth it.”
