Troy held a net-cutting ceremony at Trojan Arena to celebrate its first men’s basketball

Sun Belt Conference regular season championship since 2010 on Monday.

Fans were invited to attend and join the team on the court to celebrate as players, staff

and coaches climbed the ladder to cut down the net as a souvenir to remember the historic

season.

“It’s an awesome feeling,” said head coach Scott Cross, “We still have bigger goals, but

this is certainly a step in the right direction.”

This is the first time Troy has won a conference championship since Scott Cross arrived

in Troy six years prior. It is also the third straight year of 20+ win seasons for the program.

Coach Cross’ first conference title came following the team's win against Southern Miss last Friday, which was Cross’ 100th victory as the team’s head coach.

The leader of the Trojans team had become Tayton Conerway throughout the season, and

Conerway’s outstanding season was rewarded just before the ceremony when the Sun Belt

announced he had won the conference’s player of the year award.

Conerway averaged 13.7 points, five rebounds and five assists over the year, shooting

46.6% from the floor. The senior was listed as a preseason second team all-conference, and

exceeded those expectations.

“It was amazing to find out about,” said Conerway. Just talking to my mom and telling

her the news… just making her proud means everything.”

The conference title for the basketball program makes a fifth consecutive season of at

least one Troy athletics program winning a conference championship, with football having two and women’s basketball with two before that.

“Across the board, the success our teams have had is huge,” said Athletic Director Brent

Jones. “This continues to show that across the board it’s a really fun time to be a Trojan right now.”

Troy hopes this is the first of multiple celebrations, as the team travels to Pensacola to try

and earn the conference tournament championship, and a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2017.
