BSweet Dessert Boutique organized a cake decorating class on Saturday and Sunday for those who wanted to improve their cake decorating skills and learn different techniques.
This was the first weekend the boutique held the classes.
“There's not really much stuff to do in our community that's kind of a learning, hands-on kind of thing, so we thought it would be fun,” said Co-Owner of BSweet Dessert Boutique Jeanna Barnes. “We've had a lot of people ask us if we would do classes like that, and now that we have more room and all, we have the space to be able to do these types of classes.
“It's a lot of fun, especially when you get people that have never done it before, and they start seeing what they can actually do.”
Cake decorating tools such as the frosting, turntables, piping bags, smoothers and the six-inch cake itself were provided by the boutique. The decorators only had to bring themselves and their creativity.
“I think my cakes taste really good, but when people ask me about decorating it, I have to shy away and just do the traditional style,” said Maranda Knight, one of the attendees who is a resident of Troy, Alabama. “I wanted to learn how to make it more appealing, so these classes are beneficial.
“I would absolutely attend more of these classes because I feel like with the broad range of cake decorating and cookie decorating, we wouldn't be able to touch on everything in one class.”
During the class, Barnes taught the decorators how to evenly cut the cake for stacking, how to spread frosting evenly on the cake and a variety of piping methods.
Decorators were then able to take their decorated pieces with them.
“I actually enjoyed being here since I’ve learned so much,” said Gabby Esquivel, one of the attendees who is a resident of Troy, Alabama. “I've always been interested in cake decorating, but I've never known how to do it at home.
“With events like this one, not only do we get to get together and meet people, but it is a common interest for everyone. It expands our horizon just as a true community and makes you really appreciate it.”
Moving forward, the boutique plans on expanding the classes to include more intermediate levels and different products other than just cakes throughout the year.
Some of the possible future events include cupcake classes for a younger age group, cookie decorating classes and macaron baking classes, where attendees get the chance to go in the kitchen.
“I love just talking with people and learning about them, but then also showing them skills that they can take with them to have when they want to bake something for their family,” Barnes said. “Now, they'll have the skills to kind of step up their game and decorate a little bit themselves.
“It's just fun to see them having fun and being a part of what we do.”
The next Cake Decorating class is set for Saturday, Jan. 27. To sign up for the class and purchase a ticket or to see what else BSweet Dessert Boutique has to offer,
