The Troy women’s golf team claimed their third team victory of the season in the three-day Rebel Intercollegiate tournament over the weekend at the Ole Miss Golf Course.
The Trojans’ 17-stroke victory in the tournament, which wrapped up Sunday Apr. 3, marked the team’s last regular-season event before heading to the Sun Belt Tournament. Troy’s first-place finish in a field of 15 teams saw the Trojans topping teams such as Ole Miss, Memphis, Tulsa, Harvard and Yale.
Junior Fatima Fernandez Cano won her fifth individual title, while teammates freshman Bianca Lohbauer and junior Gabi Oubre’ both placed in the tournament’s top 10.
Oubre’ initially held the lead, as she fired a 1-under 71 in the opening round on Friday. The Trojans held a first place spot by three shots.
Oubre’ also carded three birdies and two bogeys the same day. Her performance tied her own second-best round of the season.
Troy, entering the weekend at the No. 93 spot in the national rankings, shot a 9-over 297 to take the lead. Cano shot a 1-over 73 at the last part of the day, leaving her tied for 8th place.
Lohbauer went a remarkable 2-over 74 to tie for 12th place on Friday. By the day’s end, she had racked up four birdies, which tied for the most out of all 90 golfers.
By the end of the second day, the Trojans had whipped up a 20-stroke lead with a 6-under 282.
By this time, Troy boasted three spots in the top five on the individual leaderboard: Oubre’ in 2nd, Cano in 3rd, and Lohbauer in 5th. Troy’s 282 round is the second-lowest in school history, only topped by the 276 at the Samford Intercollegiate back on March 21.
Competition didn’t come near the Trojans on Saturday, Apr. 2, as their round was 17 shots ahead of all other competitors. Play was solid all around, as freshman Lindsey Harrison, junior Becca Horner, and senior Kalyn Hudson all made contributions as well.
Sunday also went well overall, as Cano shot a season-low 6-under 66, which helped her claim individual medalist honors by three shots. Her round of 6-under tied for the lowest under par in school history.
Heading into the final round, Troy had racked up a 20-shot lead. Their 4-over 292 was the third-best round of the day, leading them straight to victory.
Troy finished first, host Ole Miss finished second at 17 shots behind and Fresno State and Harvard tied for the third place spot.
The Trojans have two weeks off before heading to Miramar Beach, Florida, for the Sun Belt Conference Championship starting Sunday, Apr. 17.
