Troy University’s Chi Omega Sorority held a Lip Sync Battle against other National Panhellenic Council Organizations to raise money for their philanthropy week.

Chi Omega’s philanthropy is “Make-A-Wish Alabama.” All of Chi Omega’s event proceeds will go to the Make-A-Wish foundation to support a child with a critical illness.

“Through this event, we are raising money to be able to grant a wish to a child in our community,” said Mollie Kate Erwin, president of the Chi Omega Sorority and senior global business major from Wetumpka, Alabama. “It was really sweet, and it meant so much to us.”

Last semester, Chi Omega Sorority granted a wish to a patient whose name is Avana. To celebrate, Chi Omega gave her a party and even surprised her with a trip to Disney World for her and her family.

“We have been planning this event since the beginning of January, and so just getting ready for this week itself is by far the best part of the year.” Erwin said.

Participants contributed to the event by competing on stage, dancing and lip syncing to their favorite songs.

“It was really fun; I had a great experience,” said Ava Leverett, a freshman criminal justice major from Troy, Alabama. “Igot to bond with the girls that I danced with.”

To Leverett, however, the night was about more than just fun.

“Make-A-Wish hits very much close to home with me,” Leverett said.

“One of my best friends had a kidney transplant and was a Make-A-Wish patient.”

Emily Price, a freshman business major from Troy, Alabama, said she loves giving back to others.

“I feel that Make-A-Wish is such a special foundation to give back to,” Price said. “The fact that not only does Chi Omega put on events for other fraternities and sororities to be able to participate and give back to their philanthropy is super special, but they’re also actually making a child’s wish come true.”

Three sororities and three fraternities were chosen as winners. For the sororities, Alpha Delta Pi won third, Alpha Gamma Delta won second and Kappa Delta won first. For the fraternities, Alpha Tau Omega won third, Farmhouse won second and Lambda Chi Alpha won first.

“We try to support all sororities and fraternities the best we can and, in this instance, not only of Chi Omega’s philanthropy week, but supporting and raising money to Make-A-Wish to a child that deserves it,” said Tristan Delgado, Lambda Fraternity President, a junior computer science major from Hartselle, Alabama. “I am very thrilled, very excited.

“I don't think we’ve ever came first in a dance. We worked so hard for the dances, and we just tried our best, and we are so thankful for Kappa Deltas for assisting with our choreography skills, so a big shout out to them –  Chops on Tops!”
