Students gather for a movie night held by Circle K and TRIO.
Troy University’s chapter of Circle K International worked in collaboration with TRIO
Student Support Services to present a Black History Month movie night in Patterson Hall.
The movie that was shown was “Red Tails,” a 2012 action movie set during World War
II.
“The movie is about the Tuskegee Airmen, and the event tonight is to educate and learn
more about our history,” said Tyshaun Caldwell, a freshman social work major from Pell City, Alabama. Caldwell is also the president of both organizations.
The movie stars Terrance Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr., Nate Parker and David Oyelowo.
The Tuskegee Airmen were the first Black pilots to serve in the United States military.
They were known for escorting American bombers in the skies and gained the name “Red Tails” because of it.
They were a crucial part of the war effort, achieving multiple successes while making a
huge step for civil rights in the United States.
“The main reason we are all here is for Black history,” said Zavier Long, a freshman
biomedical sciences major from Birmingham, Alabama, and the secretary of CKI. “We want to voice ourselves and show more character and diversity within the Black community here at Troy University.”
Diamond Seals, a junior psychology major from Talladega, Alabama, who is also a
member of both TRIO and CKI, attended the movie night.
“I watched the previews and saw that it was a military-based movie based on African
Americans, so of course I wanted to come out and see it,” Seals said. “Events like these are so important to me because they highlight Black excellence and talk about all the stuff we went through because a lot of people may not know.”
At the event, the organizations served popcorn and drinks for anyone who came to see the
movie. They also had poster boards and markers available for anyone who was a member of CKI
