Troy University’s Compass Club is offering waived membership fees for the upcoming semester.
They encourage anyone who would like to be a part of their service projects to take advantage of this opportunity and consider one of the several leadership positions available.
The Compass Club is an on-campus organization that aims to provide community service opportunities and better their community. Many members of the Compass Club join because they want to be a part of something bigger than themselves.
“Last fall, when I was an entering freshman, I found Compass Club, and I just kind of fell in love with what they did, how they help serve a community and how they give back to the community that gives to them,” said Compass Club President-Elect Brooke Watson, a math education major from Eufaula, Alabama.
The club has a focus on mental health and service.
“The goal of Compass Club is to promote brain safety and health and mental health awareness in our community,” said Magdalene Skaziak, Compass Club president and a mental health counseling graduate student. “We're affiliated with Pilot International – that's our governing organization that we follow.”
Pilot international’s principles are friendship and service. Their motto: “true course ever.” Their mission statement is “To influence positive change in communities throughout the world.
“To do this, we come together in friendship and service, focusing on encouraging brain safety and health and supporting those who care for others,” Skaziak said.
Skaziak has been a member since she was in grade school. Because of her love of service, she founded Troy’s chapter of Compass Club when she first came to Troy.
“I've actually been involved with Compass Club for 12 years now,” Skaziak said. “I was involved with it in middle school in high school and then started this organization my sophomore year, here at Troy for my undergrad, and now I'm in my bachelor’s program and ready to graduate in December.”
Now that Skaziak is leaving Troy, she knows she’s leaving the club in good hands, and she’s excited to see what club members accomplish in the future.
“I'm excited to see what other impacts they make in the local community and on campus,” Skaziak said. “We've already done a whole lot for the campus and for the local community.”
Compass Club’s next meeting will be on April 11 at 6:30 in Patterson Hall room 214.
