Cox leads track and field in T-Town

The Troy men’s and women’s track teams had yet another successful showing at the John Mitchell Alabama Relays from March 17 to March 19 in Tuscaloosa.

The Trojans were led by junior Corina Cox, who recorded a personal-best distance of 56.04 meters, enough to beat by nearly three meters her previous best that she set last year. Her throw was enough to earn her a runner-up finish in the discus event.

“We’re thrilled by Corina’s success today in the discus — that was a huge step forward that significantly improved her national ranking, and we know there’s more where that came from,” track and field director Marc Davis said.

“As for a lot of our other athletes, we saw some signs of progress and areas that require additional work, but nothing out of the ordinary for this early stage of the outdoor season as we continue to train in preparation for the men’s and women’s conference meets. I’m eager to see more and more fall into place as we proceed with the season.”

Impressive performances also came from freshman thrower Indiya Summerville, who threw a personal-best shot put of 14.22 to take sixth place, as well as sophomore Helga Volgyi, who earned a sixth-place finish in the hammer throw. Sophomore Sydney Wright also earned third in the 100-yard dash.

For the men, junior thrower Zach Douglas finished third on the shot put with a 17.52-meter throw. Senior sprinter Benjamin Martin earned a fifth-place finish with a time of 10.65 seconds in the 100-yard dash.

Sophomore C.J. Phillips also had an outstanding day, leaping to a season’s-best 4.30 meters in the pole vault. Sophomore Carissa Madson also set a personal record of her own at 3.55 meters.

Troy’s track and field team will return to action on Friday, March 25, for a two-day event at the University of North Florida Invitational in Jacksonville, Florida.
