The Troy cross country team secured a top-five finish in its first meet of the 2024 season on a stifling Friday afternoon at the Jacksonville State Foothills Invitational. The Trojans overcame the heat to start the season strong.
Alexiana Hinote led the women’s team to a fourth place finish out of 20 teams. On the men’s side, Keith Warner set a personal record to guide the team to a fifth place finish out of 19 teams.
The Trojans set a total of nine personal records at the meet - seven from the women and four from the men.
Lucy Turley, Arianna Elder, Abigail Carr, Aisley McMeen and Annalee Parks all broke personal records at the meet in Oxford, Alabama.
Warner, Caden Blackman, Riley Treadaway and Caleb Locklin all set personal bests as well.
Hinote finished the 5k in 10th place, with a time of 18:54.63, to beat runners from Georgia State, UAB, JSU and other schools. Turley finished in 14th place at 19:03.51 -- besting her previous college personal best by over a minute. Crossing the finish line right after Turley was Elder, who placed 15th with a time of 19:08.16.
After securing two top-20 finishes last year and leading the team in five meets, Warner again headed the team. He finished seventh overall and set a new personal record of 15:32.64, shattering his previous best by over 20 seconds.
Blackman, a sophomore, finished 17th overall, timing in at 15:45.02. Freshmen Treadaway and Lane Watson finished 27th and 37th, respectively, to lock down top-50 finishes.
Additionally, Zane McPeters was only nine-tenths of a second away from tying a personal best. He finished with a time of 16:49, good enough for 65th place overall and seventh on the team.
The Troy cross country team looks to carry the momentum forward as they travel to Huntsville, Alabama for a meet on Sept. 13. The Trojans will compete in the Southern Showcase, where they finished 20th and 21st overall in 2023.
