Campus parking is a major issue for the students this semester, especially with the construction of Alumni hall last spring.
Herbert Reeves, Dean of Students at Troy University, recently answered some questions about the rising parking decal fees.
Many students are wondering about the rising decal price from last year’s price of $50 to the current price of $75.
All money from decal sales goes toward maintaining campus parking lots, which includes repainting the parking lots, fixing any problems in the lots, such as curbs, and building new parking lots, such as the new lot by Trojan Arena.
“Now that it’s $75 for decal, $50 for a parking tag people are probably going to get the tag and save the $25, so the revenue into the decal fees is probably going to decrease,” Reeves said.
Reeves said that the decal price raise would hopefully help boost tag sales, which would not only advertise for Troy University but also put more money into the Trojan Pride Scholarship.
Reeves expressed the importance of the university wanting to help its students. “Even though people may be paying for the tag,” Reeves said, “some of that money is going back to help support students who are going to school here. This certainly benefits the students and benefits the university by having this scholarship fund.”
The Trojan Pride Scholarship is available to all Troy University students, no matter which campus they choose to study on.
Troy University has a lower price rate for parking compared to other Alabama universities. Students in universities such as Alabama or Auburn pay over $80 per year for a parking permit.
Price changes in parking permits are not new to the university. Thirty years ago, parking decals were $25 and increased over time; Reeves thinks that decal prices may increase more in the future.
Students are not the only ones affected by the increase in decal prices.
All administrators, faculty and staff that work for Troy University and operate a vehicle on Troy University property must have a tag or decal as well.
The parking decals allow students to park in certain zones according to their housing situation and their classification.
A student can get a ticket, even at night, for parking in the wrong parking zone. “Around the residence halls, because that parking is designated for the residents, we do write tickets at night,” Reeves said.
The university offers an alternative mode of transportation to students who need to access campus but do not want to purchase a tag or a parking decal.
Troy University provides shuttle transportation to and from most apartments and living quarters that are close to campus. There is even a night shuttle available for graduate students who have night classes.
Decal revenue will be looked at over the next week after the majority of tag and decal sales are done to compare tag sales to decal sales.
