Deltas clean the arboretum

The sisters of Delta Sigma Theta concluded their annual service week this past weekend, ‘Delta Week,’ aimed at serving Troy’s community and attending workshops.

“Delta Week is a week full of events focusing on promoting awareness towards our five programmatic thrusts,” said Mikail Williams, President of the Nu Theta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and a senior majoring in business administration human resource management from Dothan, Alabama.”

Each day, the Deltas do a different event for each thrust.

The Deltas started off the week by going to a St. Peter’s Baptist Church service and ended the week with community service. During the week, they held a daily toiletry drive. Every item given was donated to a domestic violence shelter to help women in need.

Delta Week also features events that are open to the public.

“The first event was called ‘where are my dollars going,’” Williams said. “Attendees learned what taxes are coming out of their paycheck and filled out a paycheck stub after the presentation.

“During ‘don’t post about it; pray about it,’ students learned ways to grow their relationship with God and how to make prayer boards. For ‘take your opinion to the polls,’ students learned about the voting process and how to gain access to information to help you feel confident and informed when casting their vote.”

To wrap up Delta Week, Thetas and volunteers gathered at the arboretum to participate in a community cleanup.

“The clean-up went really well,” said Aubree Jones, a senior biomedical major from Fort Mitchell, Alabama. “We love being able to get out in our community and do hands on work.”

Dr. Alvin Diamond, professor and director of the Arboretum, said the volunteer day was a success.

“We were able to clean up trash that had been dumped at the Arboretum and remove a lot of invasive species,” Diamond said. “We will now be able to mow this area and plant native species of plants there.”

Williams agreed that the clean-up was a success.

“The arboretum clean-up went great,” Williams said. “My line sisters and I helped clean the meadow trail.

“We were also able to meet other volunteers and work together. Overall, it was awesome to be able to help keep a part of our Troy campus beautiful.”
