Diamond Dash

The Epsilon Kappa chapter of Alpha Delta Pi will be hosting their first 5k and 3k fun run this Sunday morning at Camp Butter and Egg.

Philanthropy chair Amber Voss, a sophomore political science major from Elmore, has put the event together in hopes to raise money for the sorority’s national philanthropy, the Ronald McDonald House.

“The Ronald McDonald House is special to Alpha Delta Pi because we have the opportunity to visit the location in Mobile,” ADPi president Courtney Smith said. “Any chance we have to raise money for the foundation is a chance we take. The Diamond Dash is something new to our chapter, and we hope to raise as much money as possible for a cause that is dear to our sisterhood.”

Smith is a junior marketing major from Birmingham.

The Ronald McDonald House provides a ‘home-away-from-home’ aspect for families so they can be close by to their hospitalized child at little to no cost.

The idea of the RMH is that a family should be focused on nothing but their sick child, not whether or not they will have a place to stay or where they will get their next meal.

“I’m really excited because it’s local. It brings publicity to Camp Butter and Egg. I love supporting local businesses so it’s a great way to get their word out because they’ve been here for so long and just to work with another organization,” Voss said.

Voss has been running since she was in the 5th grade and last year she was a participant in the Color Run at the Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham.

She hopes that this event will turn into an annual event, but it depends on the next elected philanthropy chair in ADPi that will be chosen at the end of the fall semester of 2013.

“Usually, I’m just used to doing the course and being done, but the Color Run was very interactive, and I fell in love with the color,” Voss said. “I approached Camp Butter and Egg to see if they wanted to do a philanthropy event with us and they agreed. This year they’ve done a lot of mud runs, but I added a twist to make it a color run as well.”

The 5k and 3k will include mud, water and color.

The 5k is for anyone ages 13 and older and the 3k race is for children 12 and under.

For adults, the run is $30, $20 for children, $25 for non-Troy University students or military with their I.D., $10 for Troy University students (not including the price of a t-shirt) and $18 for Troy University students who would like to purchase a t-shirt.

The checks in times for the race are from 8-9 a.m. and the race will begin at 10 a.m.

Half of the proceeds will benefit the Ronald McDonald House.
