Downtown Troy held an Easter Eggstravaganza shopping event last week.
From March 28th to March 30th, participating businesses had baskets with plastic eggs full of discounts. At checkout, customers had the opportunity to pick out an egg and apply the discount inside the egg to their purchase.
At some businesses, these discounts could be anywhere from 10% to 40% off of their purchase.
Leigh Anne Windham, the Keep Troy Beautiful Marketing & Programs Coordinator, said the promotion drives traffic to local businesses.
“It's just one of the many ways that we promote shopping and dining in downtown,” Windham said.
Local businesses said customers enjoyed the promotion.
“When I would put the basket out in front of them (customers) and say ‘hey, you can draw a discount,’ they would get really excited about it, and it made them want to come back and look around even more,” said Sarah Clapp, an employee at Glow.
Clapp said offering discount shopping events such as the Easter Eggstravaganza gives people an incentive to shop local.
“I definitely think it gave back to the community because it does keep people from going out of town,” Clapp Rogers said. “It keeps them away from the big box stores when we're able to offer a little incentive to keep it local and keep it small.”
According to Forbes, 99.9% of all businesses in the United States are small businesses, and nearly half of all US employees are employed by small businesses.
“When you support small, local businesses, you’re supporting so many people right in your own community,” said Emmaleigh Clegg, an employee at the restaurant B. Graves in downtown Troy. “Shopping small supports business owners you probably see on a daily basis.”
Participating businesses included Rustic Linen, Brooks Salon and Spa, Heritage 1843, The Market, Burlap and Silk, Glow, Hazels, Bsweet, Douglas Bros Jewelry, Daily Dose, The Corner and Jenn and Co.
This month, Downtown Troy will also be holding Bingo nights. They will be April 4th, April 18th, May 2nd, May 16th and May 30th.
Bingo will start at 5:30 pm on the main square.
Future promotions will be posted on Downtown Troy Alabama on Facebook.
