Mardi Gras is approaching, and with it comes celebrations. While the typical celebration includes a big parade, Downtown Troy will be taking a different approach.

Instead of a parade, Downtown Troy intends to hold a band party in the square. The event will take place on Feb. 22 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

This has been an annual tradition for three years.

“A wide range of our community comes to this, including our students,” said Avery Zubaly, a coordinator for the city of Troy and an alum of the university. “For students, especially international students, it’s a great way for them to learn how we celebrate in the South.

Usually, a local band performs live music at the event. This year, the band Staycation will be performing.

The event’s main focus is the music, and a staging area will be constructed in the square.

The choice to have a band party instead of a parade is made with families and students in mind, as coordinators find it to be more accessible for the community.

The event will be promoted on advertisements throughout campus as well as on Downtown Troy’s social media. Zubaly encourages students to come and get connected with their community.

“Many people can’t travel a great distance to other cities like Mobile to celebrate,” Zubaly said. “Many celebrations and parades also end up being wild and sometimes inappropriate for younger audiences.

“We offer a more family-friendly event without the chaos of other celebrations.”

The event will also offer partygoers a costume contest and photo booth. The iconic Mardi Gras beaded necklaces will also be handed out to attendees.

Some restaurants in Downtown Troy will remain open for later hours. Zubaly explained that many restaurants will be offering special meals and drinks in designated cups.

“It’s a great way for students to get more involved with the community,” Zubaly said. “To get out of their dorms and off campus and really enjoy it, you’ll find a really nice thing.”
