Dr. Figliano named Dean of Education

Dr. Fred Figliano has been named the new Dean of Troy University’s College of Education.

During a recent Board of Trustees meeting, Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr. made the announcement.

“This new role is much larger than any I have had before” Figliano said. “This position allows me to build my team and work together to move the college forward.

“I am excited for all that we can accomplish together. I feel very lucky to have been given this opportunity to lead the College of Education.”

The College of Education is highly complex, housing four academic departments. These departments include offices for several state programs, an Office of Certification and Field Experience, the Leadership Institute and the Coleman Center in Dothan, Alabama.

“We have programs on the Troy, Dothan, Montgomery, and Phenix City campuses, as well as programs at sites in Florida and Georgia,” Figliano said. “This all amounts to additional responsibility and increased opportunities to work with colleagues throughout the University and State on many important projects.”

Figliano had served as Interim Dean since June of 2023. Before this position, he performed duties as associate dean for academic affairs and strategic initiatives for the College of Education.

As far as prior education goes, Dr. Figliano received a bachelor’s degree in technology education from The College of New Jersey. He also earned a Master’s of Education and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in Integrative STEM Education, both from Virginia Tech.

“I really enjoy working as part of a team,” Figliano said. “I have been fortunate to have some really great mentors along the way who have helped prepare me for this new role.

“I hope to pass those lessons along to others and continue to build excellent leaders in the College.”

Joining Troy University in 2011 as an adjunct faculty member, Dr. Figliano worked his way up to becoming a member of the full-time faculty in 2014 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Teacher Education. From 2019 to 2021, he served as chair of this department.

In 2021, Dr. Figliano was a Troy University Chancellor’s Fellow. Later on in 2022, he was selected to participate in the American Association of State Colleges and Universities’ Emerging Leaders Program.

“As someone with a K-12 background, I enjoy working with students and helping them see their own potential,” Figliano said. “In this role, I hope to be able to continue to impact students' lives and work with an amazing faculty and staff to facilitate continued student success.”
