The Student Government Association’s executive position elections will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 24, and the applications were made available this past Tuesday.
The contested seats include the next SGA president, vice president of legislative affairs, vice president of campus activities, director of representation and director of administration.
Senators have to fit certain criteria to be selected for the race.
“You have to be in the senate at least one year for president and the (vice president positions), and anyone from the Freshman Forum can apply for its director positions,” said Jorge Solis, a senior political science and economics double major from Pell City and current vice president of legislative affairs.
The elected officers will be inaugurated into office at the SGA Banquet on April 12.
SGA President Heath Barton, a senior global business major from Opp, graduates this May. Barton was a Freshman Forum director and vice president of campus activities before running for the presidency.
“I came in knowing that it’s going to be a lot of work,” he said. “I wasn’t about to sit back and just have the position, but I wanted to make a difference.”
Barton said some of his biggest goals were to make a difference on campus and make every student feel at home in Troy.
Barton said his term in the presidency was “the busiest, yet most enjoyable experience (he) had in these past three years on the executive team.”
He said it was also a time when the student attendance at different events and student involvement in campus life increased.
Barton said that the president must be a true leader with a passion for Troy University. He also said the position requires an entrepreneurial knack, to see where improvements can be made in SGA and in the university.
The applications for the executive positions are due Tuesday, Feb. 9, at 4 p.m. Until that time, all campaigning is restricted.
The SGA’s Student Life Committee will hold a “Trojan Grams” fundraiser from Monday to Friday next week, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside the Trojan Center food court, supporting the mentoring program of the Christian Love Center.
“Essentially our purpose is to reach out to community and give back,” said Lilly Casolaro, a sophomore social work major from Fairhope and a Student Life Committee senator. She said the fundraiser is inspired by Valentine’s Day.
“We want to show love from one Trojan to another and not just here in Troy University, but in the city,” Casolaro said.
To raise the funds, the committee will be selling different candies for $1. The candies include a note describing both the buyer and the receiver of the gift.
The constitution for the International Soccer Club also passed at SGA’s meeting on Tuesday night.
SGA invited all students to attend Trojan Outreach’s first diversity discussion panel with Troy City Councilwoman Dejerilyn Henderson on Monday, Feb. 8, at 6 p.m. in Patterson 103.
On the same day, Alabama State Treasurer Young Boozer will be giving a speech at the Economics Club’s general meeting at 5 p.m. in Bibb Graves 129.
“The name of his talk is ‘3 and 3/5: Philosophy, Prosperity, Treasury and Economy’,” said Clint Milligan, a sophomore financial economics major from Alabaster and president of the Economics Club.
