Everything to know before finals

Finals are right around the corner and stress levels are at an all-time high for college students around this time of year. Troy University offers some of the best resources to help students ace their finals.

Christine Doty, an academic advisor coordinator with the JWS Center for Student Success, shared her thoughts on how students can prepare for their exams.

“I would recommend that students use the study cycle," Doty said. “The study cycle is where students preview the material before every class, actively attend class, then review the material as soon after the class as possible.

“The more engaged students are with the class and the material, the more likely they are to absorb what they need to learn.”

Studying for finals can be exhausting. Senior psychology major and Trojan Outreach Peer Educator Jazmin Laney explained the importance and benefits of taking breaks while studying.

“Breaks are very important to make sure you don't get burned out,” Laney said. “Study breaks can improve the quality of your studying, so, make sure to schedule breaks and throw in a reward for productive sessions, too.

“Breaks can improve your memory, reduce stress and give you an energy boost. They're good for your physical health as well. Combine your break with some fresh air or physical activity to see even more benefits.”

Nealy every student knows the frustrating feeling of not understanding a concept while studying. Luckily, Troy offers tutoring services for all students in the JWS Center for Student Success learning center.

“The Learning Center (LC) offers peer instructional support services to students,” said Doty.  “The learning center’s services are free to enrolled students and include peer tutoring, study support and peer academic skills coaching.

“The LC provides trained peer tutors who work with students to develop academic skills in English, math and science. Tutors work one-to-one or in small group settings to help learners with topics in a range of subjects.”

Sometimes studying in a dorm or apartment can be distracting. The library offers resources and space for students to utilize during finals season.

“The library offers 10 study rooms for individual or group use, so students are encouraged to use those during exam time,” said Associate Library Professor Rachel Hooper. “We also offer other quiet study areas so that students have a place to study with few distractions.

“If students have papers they have to write, we also have numerous databases online that provide academic journal articles that students can use for research.”
