Farmhouse honors late member with scholarship

A new endowed foundation scholarship honoring a beloved former student was added to Troy’s scholarship portal this past summer.

The Alpha Pi Chapter of FarmHouse Fraternity partnered with Troy to provide this scholarship. While it provides financial assistance for a FarmHouse member, it also serves as a remembrance of Matthew Spencer Awbrey who passed away in December of 2023.

Matthew Awbrey was one of the most caring and humble people that I have ever had the chance of knowing,” said Andrew Wells, a recruitment assistant for FarmHouse and a sophomore nursing major from Opelika, Alabama. “He was my best friend growing up, and I could always count on him to be there for me whenever I needed him.

“He was kind and had a wicked sense of humor, and above all else, he loved God and sought to live a life that reflected that. Matthew was an important part of our lives, and we wanted to do something that would honor his memory and provide a way for his name to be remembered at the school he loved so much.”

The Matthew Spencer Awbrey FarmHouse Memorial scholarship offers $1,000 to cover the cost of books or tuition. The money from the scholarship can also assist with membership dues. The Wells family was kind enough to help establish the scholarship.

It was important to us that the scholarship be linked to FarmHouse Fraternity because that brotherhood was important to Matthew,” said Jodi Wells, Andrew Wells’ mother and Troy alumna. “He was so happy there and made many wonderful friendships.”

The scholarship will be awarded annually to a FarmHouse pledge or brother who meets all the requirements of the organization while maintaining a minimum 2.7 GPA. Potential recipients will be referred to the scholarship committee for selection by Troy’s Office of Student Services.

I myself was active in Greek life at Troy as a member of Phi Mu Fraternity and know that sometimes students struggle with the financial responsibilities that come with being both a student and a member of a Greek organization,” Wells said. “We wanted to alleviate that financial stress for young men who might otherwise not be able to participate in both school and a fraternity.

The deadline to apply was August 1. Recipients are required to attend the Scholarship Donor and Recipient Reception held each March and write a thank you letter to the donor.

“As a fraternity, we are just grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Wells for making this happen,” said Camden Cummings, the chapter's chaplain who is a senior criminal justice accelerated law major from Jemison, Alabama.

“I think that it is a great opportunity for a brother to receive this every year and also an even better opportunity to remember Matthew.”
