Fatima Fernandez Cano has earned her second LPGA Card after placing top three on the Epson Tour’s Race for the Card. Cano earned her first card in 2021.
For the former Trojan, the road has not been linear. Cano made a name for herself during her four years in Troy. In fact, as a senior she was deemed a member of the All-Sun Belt First Team in 2017.
Things got turbulent as Cano progressed to the professional level. Although she was eligible to participate in tournaments such as the U.S Women’s Open as early as 2018, she was cut.
Her official rookie campaign began with the Volunteers of America Classic in 2021. Cano shined in 2021 as she started 20 stops on the tour – making cuts in 19. She also placed second in the Race for the Card, making her eligible to participate in the 2022 LPGA Tour.
Cano stuggled on the LPGA Tour the first time around. She was cut from 16 of the 17 events she started. Her lowest round of the year was 69, shot at the CP Women’s Open.
The native of Spain had a rough 2023. Cano suffered an arm injury that required surgery, according to the LPGA website.Cano burst back on the scene in 2024. She took home the top prize in the 2024 Guardian championship. She shot -14 on the 54-hole course – tied for third amongst tournament winners.
Throughout her roller coaster of a career, Cano has kept pushing. Since childhood, she’s been chasing success.
“I’m really proud of that – that could be the thing I’m proudest of,” Cano told Epsontour.com.
The Trojan great also earned the Heather Wilbur Spirit Award. The award was created in 2003 to honor Heather Wilbur, a former Epson Tour participant who passed away from leukemia. To earn the award, one must be voted on by their peers and display qualities such as dedication and perseverance.
The 2025 campaign will be Cano’s second chance on the big stage. She has her sights set on remaining healthy and getting back to her winning ways.
