To have the honor of being the drum major for the Sound of the South, Troy University’s marching band program, is a big reward for those who have worked hard and earned it.
Rad Bolt, a senior music education major from Panama City, Florida, will mark this year as his second time being drum major of the Sound of the South.
“He’s really cool,” said Zack Wilson, a sophomore music industry major from Goshen. “He participated in the drumline’s marching basics block without even being encouraged. That says a lot considering he plays sax.”
Bolt has been a part of making music ever since elementary school when he was in the choir. When he was in middle school, the upper class’s jazz band performed for them.
After seeing the performance, Bolt knew he had to be a part of it and joined in the sixth grade.
Bolt’s favorite instrument is the saxophone, and he enjoys playing all kinds, including the Alto and Tenor saxes.
So far, his favorite halftime show from the Sound of the South is last year’s funk show.
“I really enjoyed the last songs of the show, ‘KC and the Sunshine Band’ and ‘Get Down Tonight,’ was lots of fun,” he said.
His most memorable moment was the first football game that he conducted the Sound of the South as a drum major.
“Walking out as a part of the band as a freshman was one thing,” Bolt said. “But finishing the first song, turning around, and bowing in front of everyone was a totally different experience.”
In his free time Bolt likes to watch anime, play video games, and practice his instruments. He is currently keeping up with Terror in Tokyo, Akame ga Kill, and Hamatora.
Dr. John M. Long founded the band in 1965 and since it’s beginning, the Sound of the South has become a well-known band across the nation.
“I’m just honored to have the opportunity to be the drum major and serve the band. It’s an experience I’ll never forget.” Bolt said.
This year’s halftime show will be “Americana”, which will include Aaron Copeland’s “Hoedown” along with many other well-known patriotic songs. It will be played during the halftime of the first football game on August 30.
