FOUNTAIN, PHONEBOOTH UNDER REPAIR, RENOVATION

Updated: Aug 23

Many students noticed that Troy University’s main quad looked different during the first week of class.

The Trojan fountain in the middle of the main quad has been turned off and drained due to damage, and the red, English phonebooth has been temporarily removed, needing restoration.

According to Dr. Jim Bookout, the senior vice chancellor of financial affairs, cracks in the foun-tain allowed the “pit” underneath the fountain to be filled with rainwater.

“All of the pumps and electrical were damaged,” Bookout said. “The pit under the fountain houses the electrical, or motor [systems] that drives the pumps to provide water to the foun-tain.

“The project was bid for service and an evaluation on the next step in in progress.”

The damage was noticed by the university around three weeks before classes began. Repairs will likely cost thousands of dollars.

The phone booth was removed two weeks before classes began.

“The phone booth has deteriorated due to weather exposure and needs restoration,” Bookout said. “It was removed in order to send to an expert in restoring such historic artifacts.”

There is currently no estimate of when either project will be complete.
