Through blind CD auditions, two choir groups from Troy University were chosen to perform at the Alabama Music Educators Association.
AMEA is the state affiliate of the National Association for Music Education. This organization houses all forms of music education—vocal, choral, band, orchestral elementary, etc.
Diane Orlofsky is the choir director for both of these groups, and she said that it’s a high honor to have one group chosen to perform, but to have two is highly unusual. She also conducted the concert chorale at AMEA in 2008.
“It is, of course, lots of hard work for those singers that are in both groups, but they have truly done a remarkable job to prepare.”
The Troy University Concert Chorale will be singing a program called “The Ancient and the Eternal: Invocations and Remembrance.” Orlofsky said the pieces range from standard classical choral settings to contemporary choral settings.
“We are telling a story, expressing the mysteries of the eternal through musical offerings of devotion and praise,” Orlofsky said.
Frequency will be performing pieces that it has been performing since 2009.
“We sing vocal jazz standards and contemporary jazz charts from many of the top vocal jazz arrangers, some of which this group has had the privilege of working with in the past, such as Greg Jasperse, professor of vocal jazz at Western Michigan University, in a series of short-term residencies.”
This experience with Jasperse led to the release of frequency’s first CD in 2011, titled “Fields of Gold.”
Orlofsky said she is pleased to collaborate with other musicians for these two performances.
James Brown will be a guest conductor, Hui-Ting Yan will be playing accompaniment piano, and Katerina Juraskova will be playing cello.
Student musicians are also involved with the performance, and Jerry Johnson of the art department had a hand in designing the programs for the event.
“Any performance of this magnitude requires a team effort, and as the conductor, I am thrilled to be able to work with these talented colleagues and students,” Orlofsky said.
The performance for frequency will be tomorrow, Jan. 23, at the Montgomery Performing Arts Center at 3:30 p.m.; Concert Chorale will perform at 7 p.m.
