Freshman Forum passed a bill that will allow for two new Wi-Fi extenders to be installed in John Robert Lewis Hall.
The Resolution to Enhance Wi-Fi Connection, passed by the Student Welfare Committee last week, aims to help strengthen the internet reliability of the building located in the center of campus. The extenders will also strengthen internet connection in nearby buildings, including Patterson Hall and McCall Hall.
Hannah Kate Baker is a global business major from Washington, DC, and the chairwoman of the committee. In addition to helping come up with the idea, she wrote the bill and presented it in front of the Student Government Association to get it to pass.
“Not only will this bill affect JRL students, but the Student Welfare Committee hopes that it will start a domino effect to put extenders in other buildings so that all students in Troy University have adequate access to Wi-Fi,” Baker said.
Baker said she felt humbled and proud to see the bill pass.
“Though stressful at some points, the experience of passing the JRL bill was very fun,” Baker said. “It gave me great insight into the process, and it helped me grow a passion for serving Troy University.”
Alondra Jaimes-Peña, a political science major from Birmingham, Alabama, was also on the committee. She said she was grateful for the experience.
“We wanted to make sure that it would pass, and so we had to think of the pros and cons of this bill,” Jaimes-Peña said. “We got multiple opinions on how this would work and overall thought it was necessary . . . while we do not know how long this process will take to be put into effect, we have now accomplished the first few steps to getting there.”
Earlier in March, Freshman Forum passed the Resolution to Enhance Safety on John Long Avenue, which calls for more road mirrors to be added to that road. This is the first time Freshman Forum has ever passed two bills in one semester.
Sophomore Caleb Smith is the freshman forum director. He said he is proud of the forum delegates who worked on both bills.
“It is so surreal,” said Smith, who is a risk management and insurance major from Gadsden, Alabama. “My role as director has always been about mentoring and advising my delegates to success and seeing them achieve just that in a legislative way really confirms that I have done my job well.”
