“No student should ever have to go through the experience of feeling unwelcome at school or on a college campus,” John B. King, secretary of education at the U.S. Department of Education, said.
“We must ensure that our young people know that whoever they are or wherever they come from, they have the opportunity to get a great education in an environment free from discrimination, harassment and violence.”
This quote from a New York Times article is definitive of the stance that the federal government has taken on the issues of gender neutral restrooms, one of the defining social issues that has gained national attention over the course of this year.
Troy University has converted its single room restrooms on campus into gender neutral or family restrooms.
This follows an executive order by the presidential administration earlier this year for all schools and universities to allow individuals to use the facility matching their gender identity and not their biological sex.
The university exists as a place of learning that welcomes students without discrimination. Everyone is welcome to come to the university in order to gain an education.
Therefore, we, the Tropolitan, support the university in its effort to continue to accommodate all students, including ones that do not conform to gender norms.
We agree with the University’s decision to convert singular restrooms into gender neutral restrooms for the sake of all people whom we have represented on campus.
The conversion of single stall bathrooms is a compromise to accomodate individuals. Full-stall bathrooms will remain unaffected by this decision.
We also fully support everyone using the restroom washing their hands after they are finished.
