Golf enjoys Spring Break success

The Troy men’s golf team traveled to Florida for the Daytona Beach Intercollegiate Tournament and placed tied for second against a tough field of 14 teams.

On day one, it was Brantley Scott and Jake Springer who led the way as they tied for ninth place, both with a score of 147. Behind them was Nick Fowles in a tie for 12th with a score of 148. The rest of the Trojan scores from day one were Pablo Garcia in a tie for 20th with a score of 150, and Lee Poppell in a tie for 63rd with a score of 159.

Troy ended day one in fourth place with a score of 589, just one point behind Longwood in third and six strokes behind the leader Stetson.

Day two saw another good day for the Trojans as they shot the third-best team score out of the 14 teams participating. Springer ended up leading the Trojans at the tournament with a final score of 220 to tie for fifth.

Scott followed behind with a score of 223, which tied him for 14th with teammate Garcia. Fowlkes was behind both in a tie for 21st with a score of 226. Poppell picked up spots on the final day too with a final score of 233, tying him for 49th.

The Trojans ended the tournament with a final team score of 885 to tie for second place with Lindenwood. Both teams trailed the winner and host school, Stetson, who ended with a score of 871.The Trojans then traveled to Tallahassee, Florida to compete in the Seminole Intercollegiate Invitational held by Florida State, placing in a tie for ninth.

For day one, Troy was led by Scott as he shot 148 overall, putting him in a tie for 28th. Behind Scott was Springer, shooting two shots behind Scott with a 150. The score of 150 would put Springer tied for 43rd at the end of day one.

As a team, the Trojans finished day one 11th out of 14 teams, one stroke behind Mississippi State in tenth and three strokes behind Boston College in ninth. The day one leader would be the host school, Florida State, with a score of 565.

After day two in Tallahassee, Florida, it would still be Scott and Springer that led the way, both finishing with a score of 224, tying them for 32nd. Behind those two would Fowlkes and Gracia, both finishing with 227. Poppell would be behind them, finishing with a final score of 236.

Troy as a team jumped up the standings a bit on day two as they ended with a final score of 900 exactly. That would put them in a three-way tie for ninth with North Alabama and Boston College. Ole Miss would win the invitational with a score of 851.

The Trojans next head to Augusta, Georgia for the Augusta/Haskins Award Invitational, a two-day invitational taking place on April 6-7.
