Greek organizations and the Department of Theatre and Dance collaborated and danced, twisted, rocked, popped and locked at the annual dance competition held by the homecoming committee in Trojan Arena on Monday night.

Each group was given a two-year period theme that they had to pick their songs from. Some themes included y2k, the 90’s as well as the 2010’s.

“This event is a great way for everyone in the community to get involved,” said Elijah Turman, a junior computer science major from Huntsville, Alabama, and homecoming committee member. “It’s homecoming week and everyone wants to have a good time.

“This is also a good opportunity for students to engage in a friendly competition.”

Jack Paepcke, a freshman nursing major from Hoover, Alabama and member of Alpha Tau Omega, competed and represented his fraternity on the dance floor.

“I was able to grow closer to the guys in my pledge class,” Paepcke said. “Getting ready for all of this was a challenge, preparation was stressful, but it was worth it in the end.

“I felt like we performed well. The biggest thing was that we had fun doing it and that's all it really matters.”

Throughout the night, IFC and Panhellenic organizations danced to a variety of songs from Brittney spears and Arianna Grande to Nelly and Usher. Members of the audience cheered on their favorite group by dressing in their organization’s attire and waving banners.

“I really enjoyed watching the dance-off,” said Olivia Giddens, a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. “It was fun getting to see other groups perform too.

“I know that our girls worked hard, and I’m very proud of the show they put on. They absolutely did amazing.”

Genna Harney, a freshman from Birmingham, Alabama with an undecided major spoke about the parts of the dance that stood out to her.

“My favorite themes from last night were all the dances with songs from the 2000’s and 2010s, Harney said. “It was fun getting to sing along with lots of the throwback songs during the dances.

“I really enjoyed was how the Greek organizations came together to support each other.”

Four judges ranging from alumni to former members of the organizations oversaw the competition. The winner of the competition will be announced Saturday morning at 10 a.m. during the homecoming parade in the downtown square.
