Greek members ran for the hill after COVID-19 stopped them in their tracks in 2020.
Sorority Bid Day is an annual recruitment day that invites potential new members to join a sorority that best fits them. These new members then run to their new house from Eldridge gym. This day usually takes place at the end of sorority recruitment week.
However, this event went slightly differently in the year 2020. Instead of everyone coming together in-person, social distancing with masks and Zoom meetings replaced their normal traditions.
On Thursday, Troy Panhellenic gave the pledge class (PC) of ‘20 the opportunity to finally run home to their designated house with their fellow peers.
“This is really special for PC ‘20 because it allows them to now have the full sorority experience before they enter the workforce,” said Emmaleigh Clegg, a senior broadcast journalism major from Panama City Beach, Florida who is a member of Chi Omega. “I mostly looked forward to seeing my big running home to me.
“She picked me up on my bid day, so I was excited to be able to do that for her. It’s just a full circle moment.”
This bid day redo served as an effort to recreate what bid day would have been like without COVID-19 restrictions and as a final exciting goodbye for the graduating class.
“It’s a chance for us to reminisce on freshman year and make memories that we missed out on that other pledge classes get,” said Destiny Hataway, a senior biomed major from New Brockton, Alabama who is in Kappa Delta. “Most people think Covid year took a lot away from us, but I truly think we are so much closer and took less for granted because we knew just how fragile time was.
“It provided a chance for us to have a ‘real’ bid day since ours was split up so much. Running home to the house that made me who I am was a moment that I will never forget.”
Other seniors reminisced on how special that day was to them.
“It is just a really sweet time to encapsulate such a special day that means so much to us,” said Neelie Miller, a senior biology major from Decatur, Alabama, and a member of Kappa Delta. “Honestly, running home four years later just means more.
“This has been our home for the past four years—with countless memories and friendships to last a lifetime. This is such a cool way to commemorate what Kappa Delta means to me.”
