Step4Life, an event group consisting of Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi band Greek organizations, is set to host a 5k run in Troy to support the fight against leukemia and the race to find the cure.
The run is formally a fundraising event that helps support the Alabama chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
The Step4Life event is scheduled to start in front of Smith Hall at 8 a.m. with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. on April 19.
“The 5K is 5 kilometers (or 3.1 miles),” said Jonathan Steinman, a junior music education major from New Hope and Step4Life 5k event coordinator.
“The race begins on University Avenue in front of Smith Hall and will take participants around the Troy University campus, ending in the same location.”
Step4Life was first organized as a step show that honored a band student who lost his fight with leukemia.
“Steven Dobarzynski, a brother of Troy’s chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, was diagnosed with leukemia thirteen years ago,” Steinman said.
“Step4Life was started to raise money for his medical costs. After his passing in 2002, we have continued the annual event in his honor. Our efforts help fund life-saving research, impacting many lives in Alabama and across the nation.”
Steinman said that the event is open to everyone, including the community, and all participation in the 5k is encouraged.
There is a registration fee to participate in the run, but donations are always appreciated, Steinman said.

Steinman said that the 5k coordinators, including himself and Sam Sizemore, a junior elementary education major from Geneva, encourage prospective runners to register early.
In addition to the 5k, Step4Life will also be hosting its annual step show that showcases step teams from colleges and universities around the southeast. Each year since the inception of the step show, step teams have gathered in Crosby Theater to both compete and raise awareness, which Steinman said exemplifies the true purpose of Step4Life.
The Step4Life step show will also take place on April 19, at 7 p.m. in Crosby Theater in Smith Hall.
Steinman said that informational pamphlets concerning leukemia and lymphoma will be available at both events.
