Greeks are “on tour” and “rocking on” for the 49th annual Greek Week at Troy University.
Members of fraternities and sororities have been engaging in various activities throughout the week focusing on the theme of “Greeks on Tour.”
Shelby Miller, a junior global business major from Decatur and the public relations chairperson of Greek Week, said the occasion is the time of year that students celebrate being Greek in friendly competition.
“We not only get to have a good time, but we also get to give back to our community,” Miller said.
Pierce Godwin, a senior multimedia journalism major from Montgomery and the director of Greek Week, said its primary purpose is to bring organizations together to raise money for local philanthropies.
“This year, we are supporting Troy Dance Marathon (which supports the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital in Birmingham), Hope Water fund, and have sponsored with the Red Cross for our blood drive,” Godwin said.All Greek philanthropy proceeds will be given to the aforementioned philanthropies, as well as Relay for Life, which supports the American Cancer Society.

“Every year, we try to make the week more fun and make a bigger impact on our community,” Miller said. “Throughout the week, we strive to give back to our community through fundraising.”
The festivities began on Wednesday, March 2, with a can castle competition where over 4,000 cans were donated in partnership with the office of civic engagement. Alpha Gamma Delta won the can castle competition, and Alpha Delta Pi collected the most cans, tallying 921.
Each organization submitted banners showcasing the theme, which were displayed on Tailgate Terrace on Monday.
For the female division, Alpha Delta Pi took first place, Chi Omega and Phi Mu tied for second place and Alpha Gamma Delta received third place.
For the male division, Tau Kappa Epsilon won first place, Alpha Tau Omega second place and FarmHouse third place.
A sand volleyball tournament was held on Monday, where a team with representatives from Sigma Chi, Kappa Delta and Kappa Alpha Psi took the win.
A blood drive was held on Tuesday, March 15, and Wednesday, March 16, in conjunction with the American Red Cross.
Douglas Dick, a sophomore global business major from Panama City, Florida, and blood drive coordinator, said that they received approximately 290 pints of blood.
Trivia night on Tuesday allowed team members from each of the fraternities and sororities to answer Troy- and Greek-life-related questions. The event consisted of three rounds, ranging in difficulty from easy to hard.
A dodgeball game was organized on Wednesday, March 16, and Greek Sing was hosted in Trojan Arena on Wednesday night.
Leah Andrews, a junior biology education major from Mobile and special events chair, said that Greek Sing is one of her favorite events of the week.
“I love to see how creative each organization can be and how talented Troy students are,” Andrews said.
Other events for the remainder of the week will include rock ’n’ roll derby night, Greek spirit night, Greek games and participation in Saturday’s Relay for Life and Trojan Preview Day.
Sharrnique McEachern, a junior broadcast journalism major from Queens, New York, and the National Pan-Hellenic Council representative, said Greek Week promotes teamwork among participants.
“This week promotes unity with all three Greek councils, allowing them to work together on teams to promote friendly competition that leads to funds raised for great organizations,” McEachern said.
For the Greek community, this week has many benefits, and for Andrews, the leadership aspect is a big plus.
“Troy University’s Greek community is known for producing some truly amazing leaders, on and off campus,” Andrews said. “Not only is (this week) entertaining, but it is also encouraging to witness how hard-working Troy Greeks are.
