Crisp, fall air has finally arrived, and Halloween is approaching. There are several fun, spooky things to do around Troy to celebrate the season.
Alysia Spivey, a sophomore communication major from Enterprise, said her family has a tradition of going to Aplin Farms. It is located at 2729 County Rd. 49 in Dothan.
Aplin Farms has a corn maze, a pumpkin patch, several activities for the kids and Spivey’s favorite, a sunflower garden. Spivey said it is fun for her to watch the kids have fun, but “the sunflowers are just really cool.”
Aplin Farms will be open Monday through Saturday of Halloween week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m, as well as the Sunday, Nov. 1st, from 1-6 p.m.
Many people love to carve pumpkins, including Curstan Hines, junior elementary education major from Montgomery.
“It’s tradition to watch Hocus Pocus,” Hines said, but regarding things to do locally, she said she enjoys the Greenville Haunted Firehouse, located at 1198 Norman Rd. in Greenville.
Greenville Haunted Firehouse will have a Haunt Tour on both Oct. 30 and 31 from 7-11 p.m., and tickets for the general tour are seven dollars. If you are looking for a bit more terror and fright, you can get a ticket for 10 dollars, which lets the staff know you are willing to be extra terrified.
Downtown Troy will be celebrating “Pumpkins Around the Square” on Saturday, Oct. 31, from 3-5 p.m. For this event, the Square invites children aged thirteen and under to come trick-or-treat at select merchants and participate in a costume contest in the gazebo. Vendors will be present.
Campus life is taking on everyone’s favorite season, too. The Trojan Dining Hall will be hosting a pumpkin carving contest and costume contest on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 5-7 p.m.
Farmhouse Fraternity is hosting a Halloween party on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 8-11 p.m. Admission is five dollars and all proceeds will benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Sorority Hill is having its annual Haunted Hill on Oct. 29, starting at 5:30 p.m.
“Haunted Hill is a great way for Troy students to interact with kids and give back to the community,” said Allyson Waldrop, a sophomore social work major from Cullman.
Waldrop says she thinks Haunted Hill is a safe alternative for children on Halloween, as “door-to-door trick-or-treating isn’t always safe.”
Maryjo Cochran, professor of broadcast journalism, said her neighborhood chooses to have their porch lights on and front doors open to costumed children the night prior to Halloween only.
Cochran opposes the neighborhood decision and welcomes trick-or-treaters on the actual night of Halloween every year. She said children are always lined up at her house on Halloween night.
“I think it’s important that every kid trick-or-treats,” she said. “There should be no age limits on trick-or-treating, as long as you have a costume.”
Speaking of costumes, Cochran said that her daughter’s dog has over 50 costumes.
Even after Halloween, there will still be events hosted locally this semester. Downtown Troy will be hosting a “Downtown Troy Tailgate” on Nov. 13, featuring a performance by Rexton Lee from 6:30-10:30 p.m.
