Troy’s musical legacy will be celebrated and commemorated this Homecoming with the theme “Sound of the Trojan Spirit.”
2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the “Sound of the South” marching band program.
Patrick Rodgers, a junior global business major from Dothan and SGA vice president of campus activities, said that he wished to do a music theme for this year. He said after he presented his concept to the Troy alumni, they recommended making the tribute to Troy’s marching band.
The themes for various programs include music across the decades. The banner competition will be based on 70’s disco, the skit competition on 80’s rock-and-roll and the dance contest on 90’s hiphop and R&B.
“Really what we want is to just make it (Homecoming) more enjoyable for everybody involved, make it more appealing to the students and really to show a huge appreciation and have a big celebration for what it means to be a Troy Trojan,” Rodgers said.
Twenty-three organizations have signed up for various Homecoming events so far.
In addition to the traditional dance, skit, banner and float competitions, new events separate from the Homecoming competition have also been introduced this year. These will be open to all Troy students.
“Who’s Got Sound?” will be a concert hosted at the amphitheater, featuring performances from various organizations on campus. A street painting event will also be hosted to paint Trojan pride-themed art on the pavement in front of Smith Hall.
A book drive will also be conducted for the children of Pike County and Hale County area. Troy will be competing against the University of South Alabama for this book drive.
“We are really excited about implementing a few new events and a few new ideas, and we are just excited to create new traditions here at Troy,” said Ashlee Laramore, a senior political science major from Marianna, Florida, and 2015 Homecoming director.
“I think the main goal for us this year is for people to have a different outlook on Homecoming,” she said. “It is not to be seen as a time of stress but for it to be seen as a time with a lot of fun, unity and just a really good time and celebrating Troy and increasing Trojan pride and spirit.”
University Activities Council will also be hosting a concert featuring hiphop artist Wale during Homecoming week. Tickets are priced at $20.
“I know that the cost of the concert might be a big issue for a lot of students but I know a lot of students also want to be entertained and wanna have big events on campus and with that, nothing is free,” Rodgers said.
The Homecoming game will be played against University of Idaho on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 2:30 p.m.
