After its first season was nominated for nine Emmys and won three, Netflix’s original political thriller “House of Cards,” has returned for its second season.
“House of Cards” follows Francis Underwood (Kevin Spacey), an ambitious politician unopposed to malicious, manipulative and malevolent means.
After a tumultuous first season, the second season picks up with Underwood being tapped as the new vice president of the United States.
Though Underwood has climbed the political ladder from congressional whip to vice president, his insatiable thirst for influence continues.
To accompany that thirst, the second season looks to incorporate more primary antagonist for Underwood to face. The first season notably lacked developed antagonists for Underwood to face (besides the circumstances at hand).
Any antagonist that did rear its head was handily dealt with by Underwood and his political antics.
It remains to be seen whether or not Underwood’s opposition will be effective or proverbially tied to the tracks, but the beginning of the season shows promise for more head-to-head opposition rather than political underhandedness (there is plenty of that, too).
“House of Cards” was released in the traditional Netflix model—all of the episodes were released at once.
Netflix has ushered in a new era of television experience with its original series (“Orange is the New Black,” “Arrested Development,” “Hemlock Grove” and “House of Cards” all received Emmy nominations in 2013).
The Netflix model allows for instant gratification, and the quality content being produced is competing with traditional powerhouses such as HBO.
