For over a decade, there was a signpost with arrows jutting out in every direction on the main academic quad. On the arrows were the names of countries international students called home, and each arrow pointed in the cardinal direction of that country.
Many students may have noticed the signpost was taken down earlier this semester. This is because the sign had begun to rust and sustained damage from being exposed to the elements. Further, the sign no longer accurately reflected Troy University’s international partnerships.
“Senior leaders recently made the decision to remove it after determining that it could not be repaired,” said Senior Director of Communications at Troy University Matt Clower in a press release. “There are no immediate plans to replace the signpost.”
In an interview earlier this year, Mrs. Janice Hawkins told The Tropolitan that this post, along with other international landmarks on campus, was added as a way to make the campus more welcoming.
“I just felt like they needed a connection,” Mrs. Hawkins said. “I wanted to do something to show that we have an international presence.”
Troy University has students from more than 70 countries around the world.
“Troy is proud to be known as Alabama’s International University,” Clower said. “There are many tributes throughout campus that celebrate Troy’s global mission, including the Terracotta Warriors in the Janice Hawkins Cultural Arts Park, the International Arts Center which is home to work from world renowned artists and the globe fountain at Pace Hall.”
