For most, college is a clean slate – an opportunity to start over in a new location with new friends and much more. Enrolling in college also proves to be the first time in their lives many student-athletes are forced to be a “regular student.” This is due to the limited number of scholarships the NCAA offers each program to offer their athletes.
Having to let go of something as near and dear as a sport while adjusting to life in a new place can be overwhelming for some. To combat that Troy University and countless other universities across the nation offer intramural sports. Intramural sports allow for the comraderies of playing a sport while getting acclimated to a new environment.
“Just going from playing high school sports that’s a lot of pressure compared to playing intramural where it really doesn’t matter – you want to win but it’s really about having fun,” said Eli Hankinson, a sophomore psychology major from Johns Creek, Georgia.
The fall intramural season is headlined by flag football while the spring season features two heavy hitters in softball and basketball. Similar to the NCAA, there are men’s and women’s sports, but there are varying play ranges from co-op to competitive. Troy’s intramurals also offer some co-ed divisions.
“There’s nothing you really have to do; you just sign up and go play – no requirements or tryouts or anything,” Hankinson said.
Of all the terminology that’s drilled into students brains while in college, one stands out – networking. Many students find themselves scared to get involved and meet new people – participating in such activities allows students a space to step out of their comfort zone while having fun.
“A big thing about college is trying to grow yourself socially and in other ways as well, so to be able to get out there and meet new people is pretty cool,” Hankinson said.
Depending on the sport and level of competition there are fees associated with participating.
