A total of 818 students from 12 nations will become Troy alumni following their graduation this May.
With 100 international students among those set to graduate, Troy University’s role as an international institution continues to grow.
Arlene Jackson, associate vice president for global initiatives with the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, will address the benefits of expanding global initiatives for international students to American universities as the commencement speaker.
Mary Templeton, associate dean of the graduate school, said that she believes Jackson’s experiences will serve as an enhancement for students.
“Students will benefit from hearing about Jackson’s professional and personal achievements and how her experiences have led her to where she is today,” Templeton said.
Jackson is a seasoned speaker, a global traveler and an educated presenter. Degrees in international studies from Fairleigh Dickinson University and further studies at Columbia University and Harvard’s School of Education Management have propelled her diverse experiences in both education and foreign affairs.
“Ms. Jackson has been very helpful to Troy with our growth and development of our international programs,” said Tom Davis, executive assistant to the chancellor’s office.
Jackson has been influential in implementing partnerships with universities worldwide through the AASCU, of which Troy is a member.
Her priorities include helping expand and enrich the international presence of the more than 420 AASCU institutions. Jackson has recently spearheaded projects that have paired more than 200 institutions with Chinese universities and has developed faculty, administrator and university staff seminars for universities in Liberia, China and Mexico.
Her passport includes stamps from throughout Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas, where she has conducted workshops and given presentations on international education.
Jackson was a Fulbright Scholar in 2001 to Japan and an honorary visiting scholar between 2010-2013 to China.
She will deliver the keynote address at the commencement ceremony, which will be held on May 6 in the Trojan Arena at 10 a.m.
