The Lamar P. Higgins Award was recently granted to eight students at the 22nd annual John R. Lewis Leadership Conference.

This award is named after Higgins, Troy University’s first Black Board of Trustees member and Student Government Association President. The award was presented to selected students in recognition of their exceptional service to others and leadership at Troy University.

“The Lamar P. Higgins Leadership Award is more than just an honor; it is a recognition of selflessness, kindness and the ability to create a lasting impact through leadership,” said Derrick Nobles, a senior business accounting major from Mobile, Alabama, and recipient of the Lamar P. Higgins Award.

“Beyond recognition, this award carries a responsibility: to continue leading with purpose, to serve others selflessly and to ensure that my influence extends far beyond titles or accolades.”

This award is given through the university, and recipients are chosen based on the commitment they have demonstrated.

“This award is not an application process; it is solely chosen by the impact we have made on our university, which makes that very special to me,” said award winner Elizabeth Bennett, a human services major from Eufaula, Alabama.

“Although [the award recipients] are all different in our interests, backgrounds and leadership styles, we all channel our energy into the progress of the university and community.

“To know that I was able to receive an award honoring someone who served in such an impactful role, makes me feel accomplished, seen and confident in my mark that I feel I have left while at Troy University”

Gabrielle Moore, a psychology major from Dothan Alabama, said mindset is everything.

“What you tell yourself and think of yourself is ultimately what you will be, so be your biggest fan, always, even if others are not,” Moore said.

Moore also encourages those seeking to make change to step outside of their comfort zone, be open and learn to listen. She said these are the ways to grow, not just as a leader, but as an individual.
