On Monday night, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and The Student Government Association held a campus leadership panel in the Lamar P. Higgins Ballrooms.
Kelsey Hollis from Atlanta, Georgia served as the featured speaker. As a survivor of an abusive relationship, she advocated strongly for people to recognize their worth in life before it passes them by.
“Remember to fall in love with the process of success, rather than just the outcome itself,” Hollis said.
After Hollis’ speech, the six campus leaders on the panel, Gabriela Perez, Destiny Peoples, Derek Nobles, Matt Cotwell, Phillip Lee and Ansley Holbert, along with Dr. Lauren Tapp of the Psychology department, were asked various questions about the struggles of leadership.
When asked about prioritizing one’s mental health in college, Tapp emphasized the power of goal setting and movement.
“Move your body,” Tapp said. “Go on walks.
“Physical movement does a lot for our mental health, and we don’t even realize it.”
Additionally, when asked about advice for women striving for leadership roles, the panelists encouraged listeners.
“Do it and do it proud,” Perez said. “I feel like women always have a place in the room, a seat at the table, and being a woman is, for better or worse, a flex.”
Holbert encouraged students to go for it.
“Putting yourself out there is such a good thing, not only for yourself but for other people too,” Holbert said.
Peoples advised others to take up space.
“You are allowed to be in the same spaces as other people,” Peoples said. “We as women have to work a thousand times harder to be on the same playing field, but you deserve the space just as much as the next person.”
Tapp reiterated setting goals for yourself, no matter the circumstances.
“It was always my intention to get the highest degree, and when I had a child during it, I was told to ‘maybe take a semester off,’” Tapp said.
“I was like, I’m good. We’re on track to do it because it was a goal that I had set.”
Overall, the student panel emphasized that patience, hard work and self-care are a leader’s best tools for success.
