Learn from mistakes

Chief cybersecurity officer pens new book on cybersecurity and antifragility

Using his 29 years of experience working at Troy University, Dr. Greg Price has written a book about cybersecurity and the importance of coping with change.

The book – titled “Antifragile Cybersecurity: Building Resilience in the Digital Age” – delves into strategies, case studies, future trends and practical tools.

“Most technology professionals, at least the ones that are considered successful, recognize that technology is synonymous with change,” said Price, Troy University’s Chief Technology and Security Officer. “Things are going to continue to evolve and change.”

Price said that the book is designed to help people learn from their mistakes. He used the term antifragility to describe the work.

“Essentially, antifragility means that you embrace that things are going to change,” Price said. “Instead of being afraid that things are breaking constantly, you can use that as an opportunity to strengthen the environment.”

After over three decades of experience in the cybersecurity field, Price got the idea to put his observations into the world. He said that many years of witnessing similar mistakes led him to write the book.

“We continue to see the same types of attacks and techniques, although they’ve gotten more sophisticated as the tools change,” Price said. “Most attacks are social engineering attacks geared towards people.”

Although Price said the writing process has been challenging at times, it’s also helped him in some ways too.

“Trying to put the material in a context and format that appeals to a larger audience is definitely the most challenging aspect of writing the book,” Price said. “I’ve had to write it whenever I have time after work, but it’s really interesting and has even helped me with my job at Troy.”

The book is currently in the editing review process and should be released within the next three months or so, according to Price.

“I hope the book will foster more awareness,” Price said. “There are some blueprints and suggestions from my experience that I hope others can benefit from.”
