Local organization to host fundraiser

Pike County’s United Way foundation will be kicking off its fundraising events for the year on Tuesday, Sept. 29, with the program A Little Taste of Pike County.

The kick-off event will be held 4-8 p.m. at the Pioneer Museum of Alabama located on Troy Highway 231.

Attendees can enter the event with a $5 entrance fee and can sample different foods and snacks offered by various vendors.

There will also be a kids’ corner, where children can enjoy entertainment from various singers, dancers and puppet shows.

According to its website, the Pike County United Way’s mission is “to identity, develop and fund a full range of human services to alleviate hunger and homelessness and to meet critical needs of the community.”

The United Way foundation hopes that this event will help to inform the Troy community about the different agencies that it serves.

Currently, it serves 18 agencies, some of which include the Red Cross, Boys and Girls Club, Colley Senior Center, Pike County 4-H Club and many more.

This event also gives participating businesses an opportunity to share their mission with the community.

Melinda Conner, the executive secretary of the Pike County United Way, expressed excitement about the upcoming event.

“This is our first time doing this event,” she said. “We have done several, different kinds of kick offs in the past. We are excited about this event because we believe it will be even bigger and even more entertaining.”

According to Conner, the Pike County United Way has accomplished and created several programs and funds to further the group’s mission in order to directly impact the Pike County community.

Since 2000, it has raised and distributed over one million dollars to several organizations in support of various human services programs exclusively in Pike County.

In addition, United Way also partners with local businesses and organizations to host other programs such as food and clothing drives.

All proceeds raised at the event will go directly towards Pike County’s United Way foundation to further its mission.
