“Mafia 3” is a single-player, third-person shooter style video game about a half-black former soldier, Lincoln Clay, creating a criminal organization to take down an Italian mob. It takes place in 1960s Louisiana in a fictional city similar to New Orleans.
The game was released in the U.S. on Oct. 7, 2016 for the Playstation 4, Xbox One, PC and Mac. It was developed by Hangar 13 and published by 2K games.
“Mafia 3” revolves around a violent yet realistic story that manages to show the situation of 1960s Louisiana. It mentions historical events and information such as the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights movement and racial tension.
Players are free to roam around the rather-large map and play a variety of different missions and side tasks during the entire game. Each mission gives the character experience to be spent on different skills and abilities that makes the game easier and more fun to play.
Other characters in the game are either memorable or easily forgettable as the story progresses. This remains true for both allies and enemies most of the game.
Like many games similar to “Mafia 3,” certain actions in gameplay can get pretty repetitive after completing them so often. This is not surprising of a game that is third in its franchise of games with with similar gameplay.
Completing missions is not simply straightforward as it allows you to choose to take on enemies either head-on or with stealth. It allows the player to make enemies join them in their organization.
With both story and gameplay, the player is kept involved with exciting visuals that match movie quality. No moment is wasted as the game keeps the player involved with the active background that is constantly interacting with the character.
The game’s graphics are well-detailed and surprisingly realistic in certain scenes. Visually, the game does look good on current generation videogame consoles.
Music in the games features some of the most popular and famous songs from the late 60s and early 70s. These multitude of classics range from Jimi Hendrix’s “All Along The Watchtower” to Elvis Presley’s “A Little Less Conversation.”
The game may not be for everyone as it does feature hate groups and hate speech consistently throughout the game. The creators of the game do, in fact, take the time to bring it to the players attention that they do not consider such behaviors appropriate.
There is somewhat of a slow pace to the story as it tries to get the player to get used to how everything works. This can be a little annoying to anyone who wants to jump right into the game.
“Mafia 3” can be purchased for $59.99 from participating stores by anyone over the age of 18. The game does contain concerning topics, but is well worth the purchase.
